About our Counselor:

My name is Suzette Kamminga, I am the  School Counselor.  I hold a Master's degree in school counseling from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.  Previously, I served at Garfield Elementary as one of the Resource Room teachers.

As a school counselor, I love that I can support both families and students.  I enjoy helping children see themselves through kind eyes, boost their self esteem, and develop skills required to advocate for themselves. I am working toward creating a place where children feel safe, supported and understood.

I meet with students one-on-one and in small groups to assist with social emotional skills development, building positive relationships, resolving conflicts, identifying and managing emotions in positive and healthy ways and practicing coping skills that they can rely on when faced with a challenge.

Here are some things that I can help with in my role:

  • Social Emotional Development
  • Peer Problem Solving/Conflict Resolution
  • Emotional Support Related to Loss, Separation, Trauma or Other Recent Experience
  • Student or Family Safety Planning
  • Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying
  • Attendance/School Refusal
  • School Performance or Behavior Plans
  • School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
  • Student Mental Health Needs or Concerns
  • Support for Basic Needs (food, clothing, etc.)
  • Questions about the Special Education Referral Process or 504 Accommodations
